Highlights: Andy Ruiz Jr. Finishes Anthony Joshua To Win Heavyweight Title

Ruiz hopes weight tilts the scales against Joshua

Anthony Joshua said he will exercise his rematch clause against Andy Ruiz Jr after being dethroned in a stunning heavyweight upset. Ruiz won in the seventh round.

Heavyweight contender Andy Ruiz shocked the world, dropping the lethargic Anthony Joshua 4 times in seven rounds.

Ruiz Jr. a late replacement for the original opponent Jarrell Miller, knocked Joshua down four times en route to a seventh round stoppage win at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He said that he doesn't want to "go through hell and back" and might just hang up his boots if he faces competition as intense as this again. I trained hard, I stayed dedicated. I've made my dreams come true.

"He's a champion for now, I shall return."

He will take a 32-1 mark with 21 knockouts into the ring, and that's nothing to scoff at.

The Mexican is now holder of the IBF, WBA and WBO titles - with Wilder holding the other, the WBC belt.

Ruiz even warned Joshua before the fight: "Don't underestimate this little fat boy".

"I could, but I didn't want to throw everything that I got", he said. "Talking about the Mexican style? Talking about the Mexican style, I just proved it".

The fight program is expected to start at around 9am tomorrow. The bout was streamed on DAZN.

"But inside the ring, there's not gonna be no respect, there's not gonna be no fans, no friends".

But despite his prowess, Joshua begged Ruiz Jr simply to bring him a fight at weigh-ins on Friday.

And then came the finish, mainly built from punch volume as Ruiz overwhelmed his vulnerable opponent with two knock downs in quick succession. Some believed that Ruiz had allowed the 2012 Olympic gold medalist to get a breather, but Joshua never recovered physically or mentally.

God bless them. Congrats Andy Ruiz.

The referee waved off the contest.

Alas, for Joshua, it went on. Ruiz, whose father, a native of Mexico, got him into the gym when he was 6 and had his son in bouts a year later, knows how his life would change with a win. But Ruiz Jr. made the count and scored two knockdowns of his own moments later with a left hook to the temple that dropped and dazed Joshua, before a shellacking in the corner forced him to the canvas once again.

Boxing fans have slammed Deontay Wilder for ducking Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury following the Bronze Bomber's announcement that his next fight will be a rematch against Luis Ortiz.

Ruiz made some new ones.
