Health Officials urging More Regulation on E-cigarettes

A report of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that previous year, more youngsters reported that they used more e-cigarettes than any tobacco product. The minimum age to purchase cigarettes and other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, should be raised to 21.

"Tobacco use continues to be a major health threat to children, adolescents and adults", co-author Karen Wilson, MD, MPH, chair of the AAP Section on Tobacco Control and section head of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Children's Hospital Colorado, said.

Kulas says teens find e-cigarettes or vaping cool as it allows them to blow out really big smoke clouds and the liquids come in a variety of flavors.

A statewide survey conducted by the Department of Health and Social Services revealed that one out of every three Alaskan teenagers report smoking cigarettes, cigars, using smokeless tobacco or using e-cigarettes.

The study explained that the dependence on tobacco & e-cigarettes usually starts during adolescence during which time anything that is from an uncharted territory can excite them.

In the meantime, then, an advocacy group is calling for the United States Food and Drug Administration to establish more succinct and more clear regulations for e-cigarettes in the same way that they regulate traditional tobacco products. Both cigarettes and e-cigarettes have neurotoxic effects and earlier exposure makes younger users more vulnerable to addiction.

While cigarette use appears to be down, e-cigarette use is on the rise and health official say this is dangerous because we still have yet to learn of all the potential long term effects of the stuff.

The study said, child-resistant packaging of tobacco products should be developed by companies in order to prevent experiments from curious children.

The AAP noted that acute nicotine poisoning in children is on the rise, primarily because of accidental ingestion of e-cigarette solutions. The new policies also advocate promoting smoke-free homes and vehicles. "Protecting children from tobacco products is one of the most important things that a society can do to protect children's health".


There is very little known about the efficiency of e-cigarettes as far as treating tobacco dependency is concerned as well.
