Harvick on ropes after crash and confrontation with Johnson
Sep 25 2015
Full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race results from Chicagoland Speedway. The win for Joe Gibbs Racing earned Hamlin an automatic berth into the second round of the playoffs.
The warning didn't matter after Harvick advanced by winning two weeks later at Phoenix (where Kenseth was eliminated). There are some pretty slow cars at the back of this deal. "He was pinning me down and I've got to get back up on the track".
After a late race caution for debris was put out, Hamlin elected to stay out on old tires, putting him and JGR teammate Carl Edwards in first and second for the Lap 263 restart. But, I'm just really proud of everybody on our team for not giving up and doing all the things they had to do to get the vehicle back on the track.
"I thought, Wow, that would be awesome". He restarted in the second row. I'm proud of this effort. The pit crew did a phenomenal job again, and now we are looking forward to the next round.
Not a spin Sunday two laps into the race that dropped him to last in the field at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, and one lap down from the leaders.
Not long after those pits concluded, Gordon moved past Kyle Busch into second place.
Kevin Harvick suffered the worst fate of the Chase contenders. "This Chevy was fast". "It was fast enough to win".
That Hamlin stayed on the track while many others hit the pits came more by chance than design. "But this is a points day". There's nothing like the knowledge that a win automatically gets you through to the next round of the Chase to serve as extra motivation- as if the pride of Bakersfield ever needs it. "It's kind of a shame". That's all we had.
"I don't know. I was a little behind it", said Logano (via NASCAR.com).
The best part? It's just getting started. We got a great restart. We lost all the spots that we should have gained.
"It looked like we were going to steal something that final restart", added Keselowski.
"My vehicle actually wasn't quite as good after we spun as it was before", he said. He does not hesitate to get into confrontations with other drivers and to stir up trouble, whether it's his fight or not. I just thought of that just now. "I was trying to make something happen but all in all I guess it was a decent day".
By Lap 100, Busch's lead over Harvick had grown to 3.5 seconds. He worked his way into the top five by the fifth caution on Lap 191 and took the lead for the first tim on Lap 240 during pit stops.
"It was the difference maker today", Kurt Busch said. Keselowski continued his run of top-10 finishes last week, it's now up to 10 straight.
Martin Truex Jr. has just three top-10 finishes in the last 11 races, but he had the second-best average finish in races at Chase tracks this season (7.4).
Kevin Harvick's hopes at a repeat season championship were decidedly in danger after contact with Jimmie Johnson on a restart ultimately led him to crash. It only took one Chase race for the frustrations and hot tempers to boil. We'll know who the next driver is to advance in the playoff when NASCAR heads to New Hampshire next week for the Sylvania 300.
Johnson and Hendrick, meanwhile, do not need problems with a hot-headed driver like Harvick.
