Google puts Mario on Google Maps

Google puts Mario on Google Maps

"You'll then see a prompt to enable Mario Time", says Google.

This something special will come in the form of Mario Kart racing onto Google Maps, where users will be able to drive around as Mario.

The Mario Kart-Google Maps crossover is meant to celebrate Mario Day, which is March 10 (you know, Mar10, wink wink). It was Super Mario Brothers on NES that made me - and countless others - huge video game fans, however.

Google Maps is designed for the iPhone and all iPad models. "Mario time!", which will let you "navigate your world as Mario to celebrate Mario Day on March 10th".

This isn't the first time Google Maps has provided some geeky fanservice. Tap it, and for one week you and Mario will be following the same directions. It's Mario Day, or at least it is because the date itself looks like the word "Mario".

The app is, of course, free to download but this discount is for the in-app purchase that allows you to unlock the full game with all of its additional levels and characters.

During your route, Mario will ride along with you on a red go-kart until you arrive at your final destination.

"Just do not forget to practise safe driving on the road", Google Maps' official blog says. Alas, it won't be a permanent feature, so you'll want to use it as long as you can.

The Google Maps-Mario Kart mashup will be available until March 17.
