Goodell's absurd contract demands leak, and this is getting ugly

According to news from ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, Goodell is supposedly asking for a $50 million annual salary and a private jet for life from league owners. And in this case, the committee would object because owners voted unanimously to empower the committee to work out a Goodell extension last spring, and one owner source said the six committee members have gone back to their fellow owners "a minimum of two additional times this year" to update them and gauge their reactions. The requests have thus far been turning head in a negative way among the NFL's elite, with one owner saying that the demands are "offensive" and "unseemly".

"Roger is defiant", one National Football League owner said.

Regardless of the maneuverings and machinations that brought the information to light, the end result will be to indeed make Goodell even less popular among the public. Jerry already had only a handful of guys backing him on this (calling for Goodell's job), and he is isolating himself more and more by doing things this way.

The Compensation Committee will hold a conference call Monday, first reported by the New York Times, to discuss Goodell's counterproposal and likely the ongoing controversy in which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly has threatened to sue the league if the extension, which Jones signed off on as recently as August, is finalized.

According to the sources, only about three of the league's other 31 owners are backing Jones for his quest to halt Goodell's contract extension. It doesn't seem that Goodell is going to walk away willingly either.

"I'm willing to bet on myself", Goodell said in a months-ago meeting with the committee, willing to forfeit much of the money that his current deal now guarantees in lieu of earning the bonuses.

The committee will address Goodell's salary and compensation package. "He feels there are important issues he has to deal with".

"The problem is, no one is talking about games anymore", said one owner. "It's about concussions, Jones vs. Goodell, Zeke, the anthem".
