Firefighters battle blaze at low-rise building in east London


The service said: "Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters and officers are tackling a flat fire on Turin Street in Bethnal Green".

There have now been no reports of any causalities.

Huge swathes of flames and thick smoke was seen billowing out the windows of the apartment complex, as the fire spread to the roof. The massive fire ripped through the 27-storey apartment block in west London in the early hours of Wednesday, trapping residents inside as 200 firefighters battled the blaze.

One person has been treated for smoke inhalation, according to police.

A witness has said the roof of the building is now "basically a shell" with tiles sliding from it. The brigade's 999 control took almost 50 calls.

Firefighters from Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations are attending the scene.

The London Fire Brigade received almost 50 calls from members of the public about the fire at approximately 4:25pm local time.

The London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: 'The cause of the fire is under investigation'.
