'Fate of the Furious' races to biggest global box office opening ever

Apart from the ensemble cast of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren, Academy Award victor Charlize Theron features as a fierce villain named Cipher, who has the technology to hack into the world's computerized cars in this 8th installment of action franchise film.

That included $190 million in China - the biggest ever debut for any film in the world's second largest economy - bringing its total global opening to $532 million and breaking the previous record of $529 million held by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015).

"Fate", meanwhile, opened in North America and 63 worldwide markets, including China, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

The film's worldwide performance was boosted by opening in China on the same weekend as other major markets, unlike the Force Awakens, which did not start screening there until several weeks later. And while the Star Wars movie brought in more than double what "The Fate" did domestically in its first weekend, it's overseas opening was was more in line with its sales at home. Clearly, the eight film franchise is doing something right.

"It's just awesome how well-received this franchise is all over the world", especially in China, said Paul Sweeney, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. Not only this, when we talk about the English movies released in India recently, Fast and Furious has emerged as the biggest release and strongest performer. The eighth installment of Furious series was released on April 12.

Fate \/em grabbed another $8 million in domestic earnings on Monday, the second-highest-earning earnings for an April film. It was forecast to place third and add $14 million, according to the analysts.

Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Jason Statham are a bunch of alpha males not accustomed to losing-whether it's in the gym or on the screen.

"The "Furious" franchise perfectly represents what that global audience is all about". At least two more movies are planned.
