"The time has come to establish the United States Space Force".

There is now no details and no timetable, but the establishment of a new military branch to oversee war fighting in space would require congressional approval. Thursday's plan, which requires authorization and funding from Congress, would develop forces to defend satellites from attack and other space-related tasks. Current and former top Air Force leaders have said the new branch could create unnecessary organizational headaches and bureaucracy, and even Defense Secretary James Mattis has spoken out against the idea, although Mattis has backed the idea of a space combatant command.

Their remarks were timed to coincide with the release of a Pentagon report outlining the steps needed to create a Space Force, something it does not have the power to do on its own.

"My concern is that if we militarize space in the United States, that's going to encourage other countries to do the same thing", Capt. Kelly (Ret.) said on FOX Business' "Making Money with Charles Payne" on Thursday. But these operations are spread across the Air Force, the National Reconnaissance Office, and the Army.

When Trump announced in June that he was calling on the Pentagon to create the Space Force, it reportedly caught many military officials by surprise. China and Russian Federation are the nation's primary rivals in space.

A campaign email is asking Trumpers to vote on one of six Space Force logos that will be emblazoned on future Trump campaign items.

One possible benefit of such a service branch, she said, might be greater emphasis on basic and applied research that could help drive new discoveries.

The vast U.S. military divides the globe into various commands, such as Central Command in the Middle East or Indo-Pacific Command in Asia, and so a new Space Command would be on an equal footing with these.

"In his inaugural address to the nation, President Trump declared that the United States stands 'at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, '" Pence said.

Currently, the United States Air Force has a Space Command entity that tackles numerous issues Pence explained the Space Force would be needed for.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has endorsed steps to reorganize the military's space warfighting forces and create a new command, but has previously opposed launching a pricey, new service. This force will draw from across the military to provide space expertise in times of crisis and conflict, Pence said.

Milton Glaser's design was a silhouette of Trump's profile with the word space, in capital letters, between the ears.
