But, even with other opportunities, the 39-year-old Brees will be back with the Saints for a 13th year next season. And on Tuesday, the deal that still needed to be done did indeed get done, as Brees agreed to a two-year contract worth about $50 million to re-sign with the Saints. But it included only one new year of guaranteed money.
Brees is set to officially become a free agent on Wednesday.
Offense has never been the problem since Brees and head coach Sean Payton came to New Orleans more than a decade ago.
Now, 39, the Austin native with only two scholarships offer out of high school (Purdue, Kentucky); the kid who needed to commit football exile to northern IN to keep his football career alive, is still going strong heading into his 18th NFL season. He led the league in both completion percentage (72 percent) and yards per attempt (8.1 yards) while recording 23 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 4,334 passing yards last season.
Brees said his camp and the Saints were in constant contact over the past week, and while some fans might have panicked as negotiations lingered, Brees said he never anxious.
A former Super Bowl MVP and 11-time Pro Bowl selection, Brees needs 1,496 yards to break Peyton Manning's record of 71,940. Other teams such as the Denver Broncos are also looking for a franchise quarterback and they could take shots at Brees and Cousins as well.
A reunion with Graham seems like a very realistic possibility, with several reports surfacing over the past week that New Orleans is a serious contender for him now that his contract has expired with the Seattle Seahawks.
"It wasn't like I was going anywhere", he said.
Another player who Strief mentioned was quarterback Drew Brees, a player he spent most of his career working to protect as one of the starters on the offensive line.
"Certainly, the relationship with this city will always play a strong role in me wanting to be here and ... wanting to finish my career here", Brees said.
