Does Virgil van Dijk have a case for the Ballon d'Or?

Nobody has dribbled past Virgil van Dijk all season.

In the absence of a major tournament this summer, perhaps the Champions League will be the main deciding factor when it comes to selecting the victor of the Ballon d'Or.

There has been a recovery in the previous year, though, with Holland winning a Uefa Nations League group containing the last two world champions - France and Germany - to set up a semi-final meeting with England in Portugal on Thursday.

Winners Liverpool have three defenders in the squad - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk - along with Georginio Wijnaldum, Sadio Mane and goalkeeper Alisson.

While van Dijk has only scored nine goals and four assists, you have to keep in mind he is only coming into the Liverpool offense on corners and some set pieces.

"In Van Dijk I think he has the world's best defender - and I think he can rightly say that now he's won a Champions League".

One of the club's top priorities is to continue to show their commitment to improving, and tying down Van Dijk, who is widely viewed as one of the world's finest in his position, to a new, long-term deal would go a long way to helping their cause.

Van Dijk has enjoyed a stunning season with Liverpool, winning the PFA Player of the Year award as Jurgen Klopp's men just fell short of securing the Premier League title behind Manchester City.

"So from a point of consistency and from a point of success, for me Van Dijk would have to be the man".

"I want to play", the Dutch midfielder said in a press conference.

Ronaldo's Juve only reached the last eight before being knocked out by Ajax, while Barca fell to eventual champions Liverpool despite Messi's dazzling display in the first leg of their semi-final meeting.

"The Ballon d'Or is not something I am thinking of, but if it happens by any chance, I will obviously take it".
