Wayne Rooney is in advanced talks with Derby County about joining the Championship side as player-coach, according to multiple outlets in the United Kingdom, with sources confirming to ESPN that he is set to meet with club directors on Tuesday.

Last week, Rooney spoke about the possibility of following the likes of former England teammates Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard into management.

At the same time, DC United are seeking a star name for next season and they believe that Ozil could be the ideal replacement for Rooney. He will play for and assist coach Phillip Cocu. "I want them to know that I will give my all in support of our push for the play-offs".

But his stint across the Atlantic has not been plain sailing, and the decision to leave America with more than two years remaining on his contract comes after he was snapped sweet-talking a United States barmaid who he later shared a ride home with.

"I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby County have provided me with", he told the Rams' official website.

Rooney said in a statement he was "looking forward to joining" Cocu and the staff.

Wayne Rooney is reportedly in line for a shock return to English football with Championship side Derby County in a player/coach role.

At 33-years-old a move to America could have seen the winding down of Rooney's career but far from it as he bagged twelve goals last season and already has eleven during the current campaign.

Under his guidance, DC reached the MLS postseason a year ago and are now fourth in the Eastern Conference. "I'm equally excited to begin my coaching career working with first team and Academy".

Rooney has made no secret of his desire to go into coaching and Derby feel that could also be a factor. "I would like to thank everyone at DC United for the incredible support my family and I have received over my two seasons at the club".

The former England striker will also be taking his baby steps into coaching with Derby if he decides to join the club.

DC United are back in action on Sunday when they host LA Galaxy.
