Democratic Sen. Blumenthal threatens Trump Jr. with prison if he refuses subpoena
May 12 2019
Lara Trump, the wife of Eric Trump, labeled the Senate Intelligence Committee's issue of a subpoena for the president's eldest son Donald Trump Jr.
In an interview with CBS in February, one the few times he's spoken at length about the investigation, Burr said the committee had not turned up evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.
Reporters tried questioning Burr on May 9 but the Senator dodged them.
Burr's committee had renewed interest in talking to Trump Jr. after Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified earlier this year. The summons became public only a day after McConnell delivered a speech declaring "case closed" in regard to congressional investigations after the completion of the Mueller report.
"Trump Jr. testified in 2017 that his father was only peripherally aware" of the Trump Tower Moscow plans. "Endless investigations-by either party-won't change the fact that there was NO collusion", added House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). It's time to move on. "It's time to focus on ISSUES, not investigations".
In a series of remarks to reporters Thursday, Blumenthal noted that the younger Trump lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017 when asked about the Trump Tower meeting. "There are a number of areas that need to be scrutinized by the Intelligence Committee". Mark Warner (D-Va.) (L) talks with committee Chairman Sen. Congressional sources on Thursday told Reuters Trump Jr.is unlikely to comply with the Senate Intelligence Committee Subpoena and is expected to cite constitutional right to avoid self-incrimination.
Donald Trump, Jr. speaks at a "Make America Great Again" rally in Great Falls, Montana, U.S., July 5, 2018.
"I saw Burr saying there was no collusion two or three weeks ago", he said.
Trump added, "My son is a very good person, works very hard".
"My son is a good person". He testified for hours and hours.
"My son was totally exonerated by Mueller who doesn't like Trump, me".
"For my son, after being exonerated, to now get a subpoena to go again, to speak again after close to 20 hours after telling everybody that would listen about a nothing meeting?"
Democrats, trying to find some wrongdoing on Trump's part after the Mueller report found no collusion and couldn't establish obstruction, lauded the subpoena. He has worked to keep his committee's investigation free from the drama that surrounded the House's investigation and even outside of the partisan fight that emerged around the Mueller report.
"I can understand his frustration at being asked to come back after having cooperated for such a long period of time, seeing now that the Mueller report has concluded, sort of wondering what the objective of this is", Cornyn said of Trump Jr. "The chairman's had pressure to shut this down this down for a long time".
Blunt, a member of McConnell's leadership team, said he does not expect the committee to reach different conclusions than Mueller did, but he said the committee has "more specifics about the kinds of things the Russians were doing and continue to do". "We're going to do our job".
