Among those killed, several students who were inside a grade school that collapsed, one of several buildings in the area reduced to rubble.

As per the report, about two million people in the capital were without electricity and phone lines were down.

Some 64 were from Morelos state, directly south of the capital, while 29 deaths were from Pueblato its south east southeast.

The quake hit near the small town of San Juan Raboso in the central Mexican state of Puebla and was reported at a depth of about 31 miles.

A powerful quake has killed over 200 people and brought down several buildings in Mexico's capital city and surrounding states.

Emergency crews have found 21 children and four adults dead in the rubble of an elementary school that collapsed during the quake in Mexico City, Luis Felipe Puente, the national coordinator of civil protection of the Ministry of the Interior, said in a tweet Wednesday.

That included the Colegio Enrique Rebsamen, a three-story school where at least 20 children and two adults were found dead.

"We are facing a new national emergency", Nieto said, adding that the death toll now stands at 217.

The natural disaster hit just hours after the city commemorated a 1985 quake that killed 10,000 in the country.

It's Mexico's second major quake this month.
