‘Dark Phoenix’ Director Simon Kinberg on Creating Genosha and Deleted Scenes

Currently, the worst opening for the franchise is 2013's The Wolverine which took in $53 million closely followed by X-Men: First Class, at $55 million in 2011however both of those films were met with mainly positive reviews and helped breathe new life into the franchise which had stagnated slightly.

Presumably in response to messages from fans about the unfortunate flopping of the film, Donner wrote: "Save your condolences". If you have enough time to spare might as well give Disney's Aladdin a try but strictly avoid Dark Phoenix.

With this being Sophie Turner's first major film role, she certainly did not disappoint. Longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner - who's been credited on every X-project since 2000's origins movie - actively disowned DP in a now-deleted tweet.

With Dark Phoenix opening in theaters this weekend, I recently sat down with writer-director Simon Kinberg to talk about the film.

"Logan" is the proper finale to the "X-Men" film series. It was then pushed back to February 22, 2019, before being postponed again to August 2, 2019.

It's a sad end to the famous Marvel characters that fuelled the box office at Fox for two decades. Did it live up to your expectations? We don't know really her and this story requires that you care about Jean Grey. Though central to the franchise from the beginning, the character was lost to a performance about as absent of investment as you'll ever see from its star and a presence within the narrative that made her little more than a plot device; even the early X-Men films managed to do more with the character than Dark Phoenix did.

Simon Kinberg elaborates that when Jean releases her powers in one scene, it was visually similar to Captain Marvel, so they had to tone it down in reshoots. We also just felt that Mystique is so central to so many different stories emotionally.

Dark Phoenix is the origin story of the legendary Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen in five X-Men movies. The film also sees Michael Fassbender return as Magneto alongside Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Selene (Kota Eberhardt). That's what I was going for with Dark Phoenix's ending even though it then might have looked like Captain Marvel for about two minutes. Dark Phoenix is not a worth watch considering its weak reviews and critical fan reviews saying that it lacks the magic of all other X-Men movies. Disney's Aladdin is roaring in theatres although 20 Century Fox doesn't seem to keep calm.

I am feeling very conflicted about Dark Pheonix because, on the one hand, this film is a disaster from start to finish and a pretty pitiful end to the Fox X-Men Saga.
