Daredevils eliminated as RCB edge entertaining clash

But the jubilant Delhi crowd soon fell silent as Kohli and de Villiers took over.

Royal Challengers Bangalore rode on a Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers special to as they kept their Vivo IPL 2018 play-off hopes alive with a five-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Rishabh Pant (61 off 34 balls) once again came to Delhi's rescue who had lost both openers in the Powerplay.

Earlier in the day, already out of the play-off reckoning in IPL 2018, DD, in an attempt to unearth new talent, handed debuts to Abhishek Sharma and Nepal's Sandeep Lamichhane.

RCB did not begin their innings on an impressive note, with the second over dismissal for Moeen Ali (1 off 3 balls), who was sent to bat at the top of the order.

But Mujeeb's absence due to injury cost Punjab heavily in the middle overs as Karthik and Andre Russell (31) propelled the innings with a 76-run fourth-wicket stand off just 31 balls. The leggie served up a double whammy, removing Prithvi Shaw and Jason Roy. Pant came with the hosts under pressure at 16/2. Chahal gave RCB the flawless start with the double scalps of Shaw and Jason Roy, who had their woodwork shattered after they failed to pick his googly. They shared a 93-run stand with Pant doing bulk of the damage. Skipper Virat Kohli made a brilliant 70 runs off 40 balls while de Villers smacked a 72 off 37 balls studded with four boundaries and 6 sixes.

The risky duo of Pant and skipper Shreyas Iyer (32 off 35) then got together to resurrect the innings.

Kohli hit seven fours and three sixes before he was caught behind off legspinner Amit Mishra while going for a drive over covers.

The 20-year-old has now hit 61 fours and 31 sixes in this year's Indian Premier League.

At 16 for 2, RCB couldn't have asked for better start.

The batting conditions were ideal and Kohli and de Villiers played shots of the highest calibre to enthral a full house. Makes things simpler for the person at the other end.

The tweaker: Clearly the plaudits go to De Villiers and Kohli for their knocks but the contributions of Yuzvendra Chahal with the ball was pivotal in giving Dan Vettori's side something to build from.
