It was not the start Roy Hodgson would have wanted to his tenure as Crystal Palace boss, after taking over the side this week following the departure of Frank de Boer.

"But if he loses his first four games, does that mean he will get the sack?"

A far more popular substitution than Hodgson's.

Saints unsurprisingly looked the more confident but Palace twice almost equalised before the half-hour mark, Christian Benteke denied by a point-blank block by Forster and Ruben Loftus-Cheek firing just wide of the left-hand post.

Loftus-Cheek had Palace's two best efforts in the first half, releasing a 30th-minute drive from 25 yards that flew just wide of the left-hand post after good combination play with Christian Benteke.

"But I'm not suggesting hard work in training will produce Messis and Ronaldos in the next three months", Hodgson told reporters after a defeat that left Palace bottom of the table. "To win at this ground is not easy and for this reason, we have to be really happy".

Mauricio Pellegrino will be delighted by his team's victory as Southampton put in a season's best performance at Selhurst Park. 'He's very good at getting players to understand their role within the team, ' says his former assistant Terry Burton.

Palace, as they did in last week's loss to Burnley, enjoyed plenty of possession and created good chances to equalise but were thwarted by two good saves from goalkeeper Fraser Forster. The match starts at 21:30 on 16 September 2017.

After penning the deal, Hodgson said, "This is very much the club of my boyhood and I remember in my youth watching the club from the terraces at the Holmesdale Road end which gave me such fond memories".

Hodgson said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton: Spouthampton takes on the team Crystal Palace today in the English Premier League.

The visitors were able to take advantage of some woeful Palace defending, Dusan Tadic getting in down the right and delivering a low cross which Wayne Hennessey palmed away, only for Davis to slot the ball in to an unguarded net having reacted quickest.
