Despite his easy-going, affable persona, Petty endured a rough childhood, living in poverty with an alcoholic, abusive father and a mother who was in fear of her husband. CBS has since amended its story, and the trade Variety also retracted its obituary, which cited an unnamed source confirming Petty's death. He'd suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu.

The iconic musician was found unconscious at his Malibu home from a suspected cardiac arrest. Later in the day after discovering that Petty was brain dead, his family made a decision to pull him off life support, spurring premature reports of his death.

Unlike much entertainment journals, TMZ - which initially reported that the rock star was hospitalized - says Petty is still alive.

Many artists and celebrities were devastated after hearing the news about Petty's death and they couldn't believe that #The Rock legend had left the music world. He returned to the limelight in the late "80s/early '90s with singles like "You Don't Know How It Feels" and "Free Fallin".

Just last week, Petty took the stage at Hollywood Bowl in what would be his final concert performance, with Violette watching proudly in the audience.
