Residents tipped off police after seeing CCTV showing Farmer crouching in a driveway before scooping up one elderly tabby and running off with him. The charges carry a penalty of up to 16 years in prison, and prosecutors urged the maximum sentence. Stories started to spread among neighbors about a man who had tried luring two cats into a backpack.
Schroeder had argued that a test performed by a San Jose Animal Services and Care veterinarian showed no signs of a cat having been sexually assaulted by Farmer.
Farmer was arrested in October 2015 after San Jose police officers found him asleep in his vehicle with an orange female tabby cat squeezed inside a center console. "She sentenced him to 16 years, we can only hope it is long enough", she said.
Farmer admitted 21 felony counts of animal cruelty - killing 18 cats and wounding three - along with misdemeanour battery and being under the influence. Police arrested Farmer in 2015 after cat owners in San Jose, Calif. began reporting their missing animals.
Farmer was caught with a hunting knife and fur-covered gloves inside his fluff-and-blood-spattered motor.
"If there was an animal cruelty registry then Mr. Farmer would be the flawless picture for that", Chatman said.
"The judge did everything she could possibly do", said Olena Klingman.
But the judge declined that request.
Judge Chatman ordered Farmer to stay away from cats for 10 years after his release from jail. The defendant did not address the court, but instead wrote a statement that his attorney read on his behalf, blaming the use of meth for what he did.
Petrova wept as she told how "our sweet GoGo" would cuddle in bed with her children and mourned the fact that "we didn't have the chance to say a proper goodbye".
Animal lovers in the audience were pleased with Chatman's decision, including that she took pains to list every cat by name, from "Does" 1 through 11, to others including Angel, Gogo, Rayden, Thumper, Jupiter, Traveler and Tiger.
