Calls for restraint after Israeli raids on 'Iranians' in Syria

The Israeli military said Thursday it hit almost all of Iran's military installations in Syria in response to the overnight Iranian rocket barrage that targeted Israeli front-line military positions in the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

I've been arguing all day against Israel's policy of continually bombing Syria, Lebanon and Iran, pointing out that they're not bombing us, we're bombing them, which means we're not acting in self defense, we're the aggressors.

"I repeat: Whoever harms us - we will harm them many times over, and whoever prepares to harm us - we will act to harm them first".

The Israeli army claims that, before the operation, Iranian forces in Syria fired 20 rockets into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, all of which were shot down by Israel's Iron Dome air-defense system.

Mrs May reiterated her condemnation of the Iranian attacks and the UK's support for Israel's right to defend itself in a telephone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It said three people were killed and two were wounded. European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal was not a decision that could be taken exclusively by the U.S.

The Syrian army said in a statement on Syrian TV: "A new Israeli aggression was confronted yesterday and our air defence system was successful in intercepting a major number of the Israeli missiles that targeted Syrian military positions".

"After the first Israeli bombardment on the town of Baath, dozens of rockets were launched from Quneitra and the southwest of the adjacent Damascus countryside on the occupied part of the Golan Heights", the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

On the other hand, Israel has been constantly stressing that it will take all necessary steps to prevent Iran from setting up "forward bases" in Syria to be used to attack the Jewish state.

In 2017 Netanyahu says Israel and leading Arab states see "eye-to-eye" on concerns about the growing influence of Iran in the region.

As tensions escalated, especially in its northern region bordering Syria, the Israeli Premier called upon the global community to prevent "the Iranian Al-Quds force from establishing itself in Syria".

"Should there be another Iranian attack, we will be prepared for it", he said.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the strikes, saying 28 Israeli F-15 and F-16 warplanes had fired 60 missiles at Iranian troop concentrations and air-defense systems inside Syria.

After the Iranian attack, it was time for Israel to retaliate.

The confrontation came two days after President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 multinational agreement aimed it curbing Iran's nuclear program. "The moment they are getting closer to the border and using missiles, this is something the Israeli government will never accept", said Ben-Onn.

Government forces have been on the offensive against ISIS in the area since last month and its capture would boost security in Bashar Al Assad's seat of power.
