Bucs waive kicker Aguayo following preseason opener
Aug 13 2017
Aguayo made a 20-yard field goal on the Bucs' opening possession in Friday night's 23-12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason opener, but he missed an extra point in the second quarter and then in the fourth quarter his 47-yard attempt sailed wide right. Aguayo will look for a fresh start elsewhere, while Nick Folk takes over the kicking responsibilities for the Bucs. Not what I wanted.
Aguayo was inconsistent throughout his rookie season, converting only 22-of-31 field goal attempts while converting 32-of-34 point-after tries.
After quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick hit paydirt from six yards out to give Tampa its first touchdown, Aguayo lined up...and missed the extra point.
The former Florida State kicker was the Bucs' third pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. His 71 percent on field goals was the lowest in the NFL. You just have to keep your head up and move onto the next day. I want to change that.
But there was definite upside; if you can lock up a trusty kicker, he can be a real asset and stay on your roster for more than a decade (see Tucker, Justin or Gostkowski, Stephen). I've done big things throughout my career and I know that I'm capable of doing that and capable of being here. Aguayo's longest made field goal a year ago was just 43 yards. I hit some good kickoffs. "You know, I keep saying it, I can't say it anymore". I had a field goal in there but at the end of the day, it wasn't what I wanted.
"When you get bored doing something, 'well there's more I can do". "You're a kicker, you gotta make your kicks. It's a new day".
