Navy Strategic Systems Programs conducted a scheduled missile test flight from the Kentucky, an Ohio Class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, in the Pacific Test Range, Cmdr.
The Navy said it does not typically announce missile tests, and information about tests of Trident II missiles is classified prior to launch.
"The tests were part of a scheduled, ongoing system evaluation test", the emailed release stated.
The Navy test missile was photographed over Southern California.
A few people saw it fade from bright red to white or blue, the paper said and thought it traveled from south to north.

The light solidified into a streak that continued horizontal before shifting due west, said Valco, who fetched his binoculars to get a better look at the mystery light.
Navy officials confirmed the light was part of a military exercise.
It wasn't clear whether the test was related to the rerouting of nighttime flights into and out of Los Angeles worldwide Airport because of an active military airspace from Friday to November 12. LAX warned neighbors about more noise as planes take off and land further from the ocean.
