As we look forward to Thursday's matchup, Arizona will undoubtedly be heavily favored, but let's not forget that CU took down the Wildcats 80-77 on January 6th.
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Arizona was not particularly crisp on offense and big man Deandre Ayton missed shots that normally fall for him.
And he took the Buffs' hopes of a magical run through the Pac-12 Conference tournament with him.
Scrappy and suffocating on defense, No. 15 Arizona rolled over Colorado 83-67 on Thursday in the Pac-12 quarterfinals.
"I really liked our defense, especially in the second half". Without Colorado's starting point guard, the Wildcats went on a 14-0 run and never looked back.
Arizona ranks 68th in three pointers allowed per game (20.2) while UCLA ranks 277th (25.4).
Alonzo Trier lead the team in scoring with 22 points and Dusan Ristic finished with a double-double, including 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Wildcats will next play in the semifinals Friday against UCLA.
"I thought our ball screen defense was good", Miller said. We had a lot of players working together. "My hat goes off to them". "I think we're probably on the outside looking in, but I'm hopeful".
Colorado (17-15) managed to hang with the Wildcats well into the second half despite playing a tough opening-round game the day before.
And, there was Stanford, hanging right with them for about 36½ minutes.
George King led Colorado with 19 points. "And he played like that today", Stanford coach Jerod Haase said. There's a committee that's made up of smart people that will look at everything and if they feel like we're deserving, we'll be invited and we'll go. The game will air on Pac-12 Network at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, March 9, 2018.
ESPN reported that coach Sean Miller could be heard discussing payment to a potential recruit on wiretaps from an FBI investigation into corruption in college basketball.
In the second half, however, it was all Wildcats.
He a ideal 10 for 10 from the line in the win and he only needed five field goals to reach his game-high 22 points. He's going to be a huge part any success Arizona has in the NCAA Tournament in the coming days.
Colorado answered with a short run of its own, cutting Arizona's lead to 35-33 by halftime. He had to be helped off the court and didn't return. Arizona quickly took over from there, eliminating the Buffs from the league tournament for the third consecutive year and the fifth time in the past six years.
"McKinley's important to us, there is no doubt about that", Boyle said. I thought a lot of 50-50 balls that could have gone either way went to Arizona, which, again, they deserve them because they got them.
Arizona showed it doesn't have to fire on all cylinders or need a big game from Ayton to advance. Fouled out - Ayton, Collier, Nikolic. We weren't good enough. An invitation to a smaller postseason tournament seems nearly certain.
Arizona will take pm UCLA after the Bruins knocked off the Stanford Cardinal in the second quarterfinal game on Thursday afternoon.
