Billy Bush Makes Late Night Debut on 'Late Show With Stephen Colbert'
Dec 06 2017
Overall, Colbert averaged a 3.6 million viewers for the Bush interview, according to Nielsen research.
"He, last week, for some reason came out with, 'That's not my voice on the tape.' Like I said, you can't say that", Bush said.
Donald Trump was caught on tape boasting about groping women.
Bush, who got fired from the Today show in the aftermath, spoke about the scandal during The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert asked after the awkward moment was over.
"It was like a gut punch", Bush described seeing the footage for the first time, three days before it leaked.
Bush said that it took some time after his departure before he began reading the accounts of the women who had publicly leveled allegations against Trump. "It was a gut punch, it's a gut punch now".
Amidst a national reckoning on sexual misconduct that has brought down Bush's former Today show colleague, Matt Lauer, Bush's role falls in a slightly different light.
While Trump has yet to respond to or tweet about Bush's op-ed, the reiteration of Trump's guilt isn't happening in a vacuum as Bush notes that there were actually "seven other guys present on the bus". A lot of people were not comfortable with the man who was close to winning the election and a lot of things happened. Bush said. "I would have liked to address the audience that following Monday". But he was never allowed back on air.
It seemed inevitable that Billy Bush would be defenestrated from NBC after the Mobile Locker Room tape leaked. "I don't think CBS would let me". "It was the beginning of me saying get up and stop being sorry for yourself". There's life to live, let's go, get better - be a better man, be a better person.' So I passed the television in the office when I was checking in. "Tough", Bush said. "Irony". "I was there, you were there, that is your voice on the tape".
"You don't get to say that".
"It was a hard time", he said, reminding the audience of the political climate 14 months ago. "You dealt with it for 14 minutes and went on to be the president". Bush was careful to point out that Trump's delusional denial is far more insulting to the women (more than a dozen) who have accused the president, on the record, of sexual misconduct.
Bush also noted that 20 women have come forward in public with detailed accounts of Trump's alleged incidents of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Haha.' No, they don't.
"I said, 'OK, you're reopening wounds on them too. Enough's enough ... stop playing around with people's lives".
"When he said this, it infuriated me on the personal front, and then..."
Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, Billy Bush, and Matt Lauer appear on NBC's"Today" show at the Rio Olympics in 2016. But at the time, The Apprentice was a massive hit, and shared a parent company with Access Hollywood.
Bush was there, and he's getting a shot at redemption with his forthright acknowledgement that, yes, Trump was part of the conversation. "You had to kiss the ring of the Donald".
"It was 2005, and his ratings were through the roof and he was the big star of NBC". You kind of figure, 'Well that's not Dice when he's home.
