Australia's Deadliest Mass Shooting In Decades Leaves Seven Dead
May 13 2018
The deadly incident was Australia's worst mass shooting since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, when a gunman opened fire in a cafe in Tasmania and then hunted down more victims in his vehicle, killing 35 and injuring many others.
Several Australian media outlets are reporting Peter Miles, the grandfather, is a suspect - speculating he shot his six family members before turning the gun on himself.
Five bodies were found inside a house and two outside.
Confirming suggestions of a murder-suicide, Mr Dawson added: "I wish to emphasise that police do not believe any other person is involved in these crimes". The bodies of Peter and Cynda Miles were found Friday at their farm in Osmington, near Margaret River, Wester Australia.
"I have come here in my role as police commissioner to provide support to the community, first responders, the family of the victims and all of those who are really feeling the devastating impact of this bad tragedy".
The mother, Katrina Miles, was found dead with her three sons and one daughter, ages 8 to 13.
"The loss of any life is tragic, but the loss of four children and three adults, this is a significant tragedy".
"Her wealth of knowledge and willingness to share her passion for home education was something that we are all incredibly grateful for", she said.
In a Facebook post on her own page, Ms Miles described herself as the "parent of four lovely children".
Mr Dawson described the discovery as "devastating".
Katrina Miles and her four children were all killed.
Just last month Katrina had taken to Facebook to complain about her ex, writing: 'My ex does not stop stalking me'.
WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson confirmed the guns belonged to Mr Miles.
Early yesterday morning, news spread like wildfire through the town of 9,000 that a serious crime had occurred. "I have extensive handyman abilities and experience with a wide variety of farm equipment, can fix fences, and tidy up the property from storm damage", he said.
The police said that four children and three adults were among those murdered.
Police were alerted to the shootings by a phone call from a "male person" at the property, who was apparently the killer. Even U.S. President Barack Obama pointed to the Land Down Under's gun laws as a model for responsible gun control.
Counselling services are available from 1pm Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Margaret River Community Resource Centre. Mrs Miles has been a stalwart in the sustainability community, volunteering with the local Transition Network and leading recycling initiatives including Cynda's Soft Salvage.
