Antoine Griezmann to leave Atletico Madrid

French striker Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he will leave them in the close season, the Spanish club said on Twitter on Tuesday.

Griezmann's announcement represents a massive U-turn, having declared Atletico was "My home" in the midst of Barcelona's pursuance of him past year.

"@AntoGriezmann He has informed the club that he will not continue as rojiblanco next season", a tweet read.

And in order to facilitate his departure from the club, the Frenchman will himself pay the club their asking price.

Griezmann had previously been attached with moves to Barcelona and Manchester United.

"The truth is it has been hard to arrive to this point but I feel it's what I need to do, I want to thank you for all the support you have given me in these five years, where I won my first trophies".

The France worldwide forward has announced that he will be leaving the club, with multiple reports suggesting a move to Spanish rival Barcelona is in the offing.

Griezmann said in a video posted on the club's Twitter account: "It has been five incredible years, thank you very much for everything, I carry you in my heart".

"Talks ongoing with the player about the contract to finalise the deal (5 years)".

"[I want] to tell you I have taken the decision to leave". Since 2014, he's been at Atletico and has scored 133 goals in 252 games for the club, winning three trophies. "He is at a team that plays for him".
