Bezos is the largest shareholder of Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer. Most of Bezos' wealth comes from his Amazon holdings, tying his net worth to market fluctuations.
Gates is now worth $91.9 billion according to Forbes, and $93.3 billion by Bloomberg.
He and Bill Gates traded the title of world's richest person several times a year ago.
Bezos also controls closely held space exploration business Blue Origin and the Washington Post. He first crossed the $100 billion net worth mark in November at the start of the holiday shopping season, once again helped by stock performance of Amazon. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $148 billion today. He has given away nearly 700 million Microsoft shares and $2.9 billion of cash and other assets since 1996, according to an analysis of his publicly disclosed giving.
Still, of those individuals whose wealth is publicly traceable, Bezos is the richest person alive. Shares of Amazon rose by 1.4 percent Monday, adding about $1.4 billion to Bezo's net worth, CNN reported.
