Alex Ovechkin has knocked out a rising National Hockey League star Andrei Svechnikov with just a few powerful punches as things got heated between the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes during the latest Stanley Cup playoff round.

Linesman Scott Cherrey pulls Alex Ovechkin off of Andrei Svechnikov during the first period.

Andrei Svechnikov had to know who he was picking a fight with.

Ovechkin, the playoff-hardened Stanley Cup champion of a year ago, appeared to knock Svechnikov out with a series of right hands.

Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin, right, of Russian Federation, punches Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov, also of Russian Federation, during the first period of Game 3 of an NHL hockey first-round playoff series in Raleigh, N.C., Monday, April 15, 2019. All it took was three devastating and frankly scary blows to the face before the outmatched 19-year-old was lying prone on the ice. Both players were assessed 5-minute major penalties for the fight. As per the Hurricanes, the rookie would not return to Monday's game. Washington entered the evening up 2-0 in the series.
