AIADMK merger likely after TTV Dinakaran ouster

Mr Panneerselvam, the head of the rival faction, is also in Delhi.

Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami's faction of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) passed a resolution on Thursday denouncing current party General Secretary TTV Dinakaran.

The announcement, made at a meeting chaired by Palanisamy, paved the way for the split of the AIADMK (Amma) faction, in part cleared the way for a merger of the Palaniswamy-led faction joining hands with erstwhile chief minister O Panneerselvam. As party general secretary, Sasikala has all the powers to appoint or remove people from the party... "Further, many have approached the Election Commission to nullify her appointment", the carefully-worded statement read.

The meeting also invalidated the appointment of Dhinakaran as deputy general secretary - he was appointed by Sasikala before she went to jail in the wealth case in February. Downplaying rebellion by former chief minister O Panneerselvam, he said some may have separated from the party but it will have no bearing on the government. As per party bylaw, Dhinakaran can not be an office bearer as he failed to continue as a member for five years.

Then, at the launch of TV show Bigg Boss, which he is anchoring, the actor said, "There's corruption everywhere". He said the ministers were acting against him due to some "fear", and only they should explain what it was.

Rajinikanth in June made political hearts beat faster by announcing that he is contemplating a new day job.

The Opposition DMK is watching the developments closely and may demand a special Assembly session to move a no-confidence motion or, as party sources said, may take some "extraordinary" decision to prove that the government has no majority. "They said something outside and have stated something different in the affidavit furnished with the EC".

The list of leaders includes AIADMK's Nainar Nagendran, the former industries minister, who belongs to the politically powerful Thevar community.

The induction of these leaders and cadre into the BJP will happen during BJP President Amit Shah's visit to the state. That would mean Palanisami manages the government while the party is controlled by OPS.
