Drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán may not have had any idea who Sean Penn was before agreeing to meet with him in the jungle, but he definitely knew all about Penn's companion, Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, a lovely tequila spokesperson he wanted to bring home to his mother.

The statement comes after text messages obtained by a Mexican newspaper appear to indicate El Chapo had an infatuation with del Castillo.

Instant messages among Guzman, one of his lawyers and del Castillo published by local paper Milenio on Wednesday show that the kingpin initially had no idea who Penn was.

CBS News anchor Charlie Rose teased a sitdown interview with Penn while speaking to reporters at a Television Critics Association panel Tuesday.

Penn described in an article for Rolling Stone that Guzman greeted del Castillo "like a daughter" when he opened her door for the interview in February 2014.

Guzman left his mountain hideout because troops were circling him, but his hope of seeing her again also led him to the city, the officials said. Many expressed admiration and a longing for the next meeting, more than concern about the purported movie project.

According to Reuters, Badillo's chief complaint against Penn comes from a quote that the actor attributed to Guzman: "I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world". She was identified as "Ermoza".

M: I'm beyond moved that you say you will care for one has ever taken care of me, thank you!

"I look forward to sharing my story with you".

Del Castillo responds in kind.

Kate Del Castillo has finally addressed everyone after news broke that she was involved with "El Chapo" while he was a fugitive.

Guzman's ties with del Castillo began publicly in 2012 when the actress, who has fronted campaigns for L'Oreal and Ford, wrote an open letter calling on the capo to "traffic in goodness" and saying she believed more in him than the government.

After Penn landed in Mexico, Mexican officials asked the US government for assistance getting cell phone records in an effort to track El Chapo, one of the USA law enforcement officials told CNN. The drug lord tells one of his lawyers in another chat, "the DEA has all her devices tapped, and at her house the DEA has cameras to see who visits her", apparently referring to a women who was to meet with the actress. They were then stopped and captured by police shortly afterwards.

Based on Mexican intelligence reports, Penn and Del Castillo were met with a group of men and were taken to an airstrip in Nayarit state, where they flew in a small plane to Guzman's camp in the municipality of Cosala. The U.S. official did not say if the U.S. complied, and the Mexican official could not confirm a request had been made.
