'Abolish ICE' isn't about open borders

The agency has become a lightning rod under the Trump administration.

The poll found 60 percent agreed with Trump's argument that Democrats are more interested in 'exploiting the nation's immigration issue for political gain, ' compared to 34 percent who said Democrats are more interested in 'resolving the nation's immigration issue'.

KUT's Jennifer Stayton spoke to O'Rourke on his way to campaign in Austin on Wednesday. "ICE is simply not doing that", Blumenauer said in a statement.

This transcript has been lightly edited for clarity. The order also vastly expanded Ice's immigration enforcement powers. "I am pleased that ICE will continue to be led by an experienced and well-respected career law enforcement officer who will be a strong advocate for the agency's workforce".

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 25% of Likely U.S. Voters favor getting rid of ICE whose duties include border control.

This comes in response to far-left attacks and mass protests against immigration enforcement.

Over the weekend and into this week, Trump tweeted about it repeatedly, saying Democrats want to get rid of ICE so they can have open borders and more crime. And more recently, ICE allegedly detained 92 immigrants on a plane for almost two days in what advocates called "slave ship" conditions.

O'Rourke said the first step would be for Congress to re-write the laws "to reflect the reality on the ground, to reflect our interests, to reflect our values". Sixty percent (92 percent of Republicans, 39 percent of Democrats, and 54 percent of independents) supported the barriers, while 40 percent did not.

Stayton: So what would you want to see in new immigration legislation specifically? According to their website, they are a "a network of volunteer lawyers and community organizers who stand ready to respond to immigration raids and increased enforcement affecting Los Angeles County and beyond".

Assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll Tim Malloy said the poll spelt more bad news for Mr Trump.

Put the numbers together, and a substantial majority said illegal border crossers, and the children they brought, should be returned to their home countries.

ICE now has more than 20,000 employees and has a presence in all 50 states.

This is the fight that Trump wants to have, over security and law enforcement, rather than massive detention centers and frantic parents who can not find their children.

Stayton: It seems like there are sort of two levels of discussion as this debate has been going on about current practices and family separations and some discussion about ICE, also.

One way some cities, counties and states become "sanctuaries" is this: they have made a decision to only honor ICE HOLDS for risky criminals or to limit information about release dates.

"All the Democrats who are speaking out would agree with the things you said", she said.
