5 killed, 2 hurt in head-on crash on California highway

Riverside County Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man who police said was shot in an exchange of gunfire with California Highway Patrol officers during a traffic stop at about 2 a.m. on October 23, 2015, in Highgrove.

Two motorcycles were down in the middle lane and two riders were in the road, and that dozens of other motorcycles were at the scene as well. An unidentified woman driving a Mercedes Benz, the vehicle from San Jose, was driving westbound with four passengers.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth passenger in the Mercedes was also airlifted to a Modesto hospital. For unknown reasons, the two vehicles collided head-on on the highway east of Smith Station Road.

The fire spread from the cars to the hillside area of the Stanislaus National Forest and the highway was closed for about five hours.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, in accordance with CHP policy, the statement said, adding that their names "will not be released at this time".

"We never rule that out until we know for sure", Norton said.
