The boat was navigating the Krishna river. Andhra Pradesh DGP Sambha Shiva Rao confirmed recovery of 11 bodies. There were 38 tourists on boat belonging to a private operator and coming to Pavitra Sangam at Ibrahimpatnam from Bhavani Island. The police is trying to identify the other victims.
The personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are leading the search and rescue operation.
According to the AP State Disaster Management Authority, there are two NDRF teams with 30 members each, 45 members of the State Disaster Rescue Force and 12 rescue boats now working on the rescue operation.
"According to preliminary investigation, the private agency which was operating the boat did not have a licence from the tourism department", he said. As many as 20 passengers wearing life jackets were brought ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen.
When the incident occurred, there were an estimated 30 tourists on board. 35 people boarded the boat which has the capacity of only 15 people.
Rajappa also announced an ex gratia of Rs 8 lakh to each of the families of the deceased. Some of the survivors complained that the police that the boat was shaking right from moment it started from Bhavani Island.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed shock over the accident and ordered a probe by a senior police officer.
